Ballarat lies with 90.000 inhabitants in Victoria, 105 kilometers northwest of Melbourne. The city´s modern architecture blends with historical buildings such as the City Library, the Law Courts and Justice Centre and the Ballarat Base Hospital and creates a consistent cityscape. In 2003, Ballarat became one of the first members of the International League of Historical Cities. Special places of interest are the wide boulevards and the beautiful main street Sturt Street. This is also the place where most Avenues of Honour are situated throughout Victoria; the Ballarat Avenue of Honour which spans 15 kilometers is lined by 4.000 trees with a badge on each of them that shows the name of a soldier who took part in World War I. The Ballarat Botanical Gardens belong to Australia´s most beautiful gardens and offer a broad range of plants and trees. Lake Wendouree hosted the 1956 rowing competition of the Olympic Summer Games. Furthermore, the Gardens feature an up-to-date glasshouse and garden center and host the annual Ballarat Begonia Festival. Another highlight is the Prime Ministers´ Walk with bronze busts of every Australian Prime Minister. The Ballarat Wildlife Park is also worth seeing and has won several prizes; you can see a large collection of reptiles and get in touch with kangaroos, koalas and wombats. The city´s nightlife is very exciting and offers different dance clubs as well as a very lively live music and jazz scene. Hotels are popular meeting points among young people; furthermore, there are many restaurants, wine bars and theme restaurants at Sovereign Hill and Kyral Castle. The city´s climate is temperate and features four distinct seasons. Daily high temperatures reach 24,9 °C in January and 10 °C in July.
