City Profile Sydney

The city of Sydney has about 170.000 inhabitants. Its downtown area is limited by the harbor and Circular Quay in the North, Macquarie Street in the East, Western Distributor in the West and Liverpool Street in the South. It is Australia´s financial, commercial and industrial center and an important destination for tourism. The city´s landmarks are the shell-shaped opera house about which the architect says it is meant to look like an opening orange and the well known Harbour Bridge next to the giant Royal Botanic Gardens. You can easily develop the city centre on foot, and besides the harbour area, the old town “The Rocks” with its storage buildings at Sydney Cove is very worth seeing. The highest building is Sydney Tower which is 305 meters tall and offers a viewing platform with a great view of the harbour. The area around Darling Harbour is considered as the entertainment centre which can easily be reached by Monorail; there are many restaurants, a Sega-World-Park, the Panasonic IMAX Theatre, event locations with different programs, the Chinese Garden, the Maritime Museum and the Sydney Aquarium which is a sea museum with glass tunnels. Sydney is situated in the subtropical zone, but it is not very hot since the coast is near. Annual average temperature is 17,4 °C, and temperatures in winter never sink below 5 °C. Because of this weather, beaches are very attractive for surfers and tourists, especially popular Bondi Beach.
