Description of the Edith Cowan University

More Photos

Edith Cowan University is the only university in Australia that is named after a woman: Edith Dircksey Cowan, Australia's first Parliamentarian and fighter for social justice and equity. ECU is the second largest university in the continent. The university has placed particular attention on students receiving practical education during their study period, in order to make the transition into the "real world" smoother. Practical projects, industrial internships, and guest lecturers are some of the points of concentration for the program. With over 300 offered courses, one has the opportunity to find a fitting type of study and reach their goals more efficiently. Additionally, ECU has a partnership with IBM, that in turn, makes sure that the campuses are equipped with state-of-the-art instruction and lecture rooms.

Location of the Edith Cowan University
Of ECU's four campuses, three are within a relatively short distance to Perth's center. With modern public transportation, one only need to travel 45 minutes. Only the Southwest campus in Bunbury lies about 200 Kilometers South of Perth. From Mount Lawley Campus, you only need to travel a couple of minuted to reach the City. The campus offers students state-of-the-art learning material, a sport complex, and different living options. In addition, the campus has one of the most successful teaching institutions for Arts: The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Then there is the Joondalup Campus, that has, next to the learning facilities, an outdoor recreation center, and a Summer outdoor-Cinema. The third campus, Churchland Campus also lies only a couple of minutes from Perth's center, and is easily reached by freeway. The fourth campus, the South West Campus, is two hours away, but lies in Australia's second largest City, Bunbury, and is the largest university outside of the metropolitan region. The campus offers modern lecture rooms, small class sizes, a large variety of courses, and newly-built living accommodations.

City Profile Perth
Perth is situated in Southwest Australia on the Indian Ocean and is in spite of 1,4 million inhabitants more settled than the cities on Australia´s eastern coast but still very interesting. The so-called “Soul of the City”, King´s Park, is a 400 hectare area on the outskirts of the city center which mainly consists of natural Australian scrubland. The premises also contain a botanical garden. Those who rather like sports can go to the beach since Perth is a metropolis of sailing and water sports, even though the water temperatures reach only 20 to 22 °C, being influenced by an Antarctic drift. Anyway, Perth is known as the “Sun City” since the sun shines for ten to fourteen hours almost every day. You can also go in for something downtown, for instance do some shopping in the pedestrian area Hay Street / Murray Street or enjoy yourself in the entertainment district of Northbridge. Those who like culture can visit many different theatres, exhibitions, concerts and a lot more – there is something for everyone.
