Description Central Saint Martins College

Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design was founded in 1989 after the merger of the Central School of Arts & Crafts and Saint Martin's School of Art, which were both founded in the middle of the 19th century. While the Central School of Arts focused more on theater design, industrial design and graphic design, St. Martin's School was well-known for fashion design and fine arts. The merger of the two created a new school that could offer in-depth studies in all these areas. Another merger with the Drama Center London in 1999 added courses in performing arts to the school's range of subjects.

Today, the college is divided into the following five units: School of Art, School of Fashion & Textiles, School of Graphic & Industrial Design, Byam Shaw School of Art and the Drama Center.

The different schools that now make up Central Saint Martins have, over the years, produced a number of well-known alumni and through that have contributed to the development of British pop culture. Saint Martin's school of Art, for example, was the meeting point for many Punk- and New Wave-bands such as the famous Sex Pistols, who had their first gig (which ended after five minutes with the band being thrown out) at Saint Martin's in 1975. Other graduates such as Pierce Brosnan or Colin Firth will more than likely have better memories of their time at what is today Central Saint Martins, since their education has helped them to develop great careers.

Today, Central Saint Martins College is part of the University of the Arts London, which also includes Chelsea College of Art & Design, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, Wimbledon College of Art and Camberwell College of Arts.

Location Central Saint Martins College
Central Saint Martins' facilities are spread throughout the buildings of the old schools and colleges that make up the college today. The main campus is located on Southampton Row in Clerkenwell. Two of the other three campuses are within walking distance, being located on Charing Cross Road and Back Hill. Only Byam Shaw School of Art, which is also part of CSM, is five Tube-stops further north in Islington.

Clerkenwell is located in the center of London, only three Tube-stops away from Piccadilly Circus. Just like other parts of the city, Clerkenwell used to be a little village of its own until the sprawl of the City of London made it a quarter of what is today central London. However, Clerkenwell still has its own historical center (Clerkenwell Green) which preserves the old village charm. During the 17th century, Clerkenwell was considered one of the fashionable neighborhoods to live in. This changed after the second World War, when the local industry went into decline. In the early 1990s Clerkenwell was re-discovered as an attractive inner-city living quarter when many young professionals began to settle in lofts, establish offices and galleries and develop a vibrant night life in newly opened bars, pubs and nightclubs.

London has 7.5 million inhabitants and is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The city spans over 45 kilometers along the River Thames in southeast England on the island of Great Britain. Being situated in the temperate zone, summers are usually not too hot and winters never too cold since temperatures fall scarcely below the freezing point. There is so much to see in London, for instance the British Museum in Bloomsbury with more than six million exhibits or the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square. Other well-known museums and exhibitions are, amongst others, Madame Tussaud´s Waxworks or the National History Museum. You can also visit the Royal Family´s residences such as St. James´s Palace where the Prince of Wales lives or Buckingham Palace, the Queen´s residence, with the changing of the guard, a ritual that is well-known throughout the whole world. Interesting buildings are Saint Paul´s Cathedral, the Tower of London or London Bridge. It is situated on the site of the only bridge that crossed the Thames in the city until the end of the 18th century. The best known tower is the bell tower which is 98 meters tall and belongs to Big Ben, a part of the Palace of Westminster, seat of the English Parliament. Hyde Park is one of the most popular parks in the city and contains the Marble Arch and Speakers´ Corner. It has once been called “London´s Lung”.
