City Profile Madrid
Madrid is not only Spain´s capital but also the traffic hub of the country: The milestone zero is located on the “Puerta del Sol” square, and all highways start here and form the shape of a spider´s web. With 3.1 million inhabitants, Madrid is the third largest city of the European Union after London and Berlin. The climate is continental and features very hot summers and rather cold winters; there are no temperate periods. The Spanish call this “Sol o Sombra”, sun or shadow. Being a metropolis, Madrid offers something for every fancy. Those who are interested in culture can visit the so-called museum triangle at Paseo del Prado with three of the world´s most important museums in a mutual distance of only a few hundred meters: Museo del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and Museo de Arte Thyssen-Bornemisza. The municipal park, Retiro Park, is particularly suitable for relaxing. It is not the largest, but certainly the most beautiful municipal park. Especially for those who want to go out, the city has a lot to offer. You can go out every night, but you should keep in mind that tapas bars and restaurants do not open until 8 or 9 pm. But then you can celebrate until the next morning. The bars in the Arguelles and Moncloa districts are particularly frequented by students and other youths.
