Description of the University of California Davis

More Photos

At the University of California Davis, more than 100 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate programs are offered. This constitutes the biggest spectrum of studies at a Californian campus. UC Davis´ main focus is placed on generation, enhancement, distribution, and use of knowledge. To do so, it offers courses in the areas of arts, humanities, biology and physics, social sciences, agricultural and environmental programs, engineering, education, law, management, medicine, and veterinary medicine. The main library supports the students in learning and holds more than 3,29 million volumes. Culture and arts are ubiquitous as well, for example at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Besides, there are a lot of activities to attend at the university; it has one of the country´s biggest athletic programs with more than 700 students who take part in 26 different sports. Furthermore, they can join one of the numerous student sport clubs. The Schaal Aquatics Center with its Olympia-sized pool also contributes to this activity, as well as the Equestrian Center, and a Craft Center. Students can eat or drink something in the Silo Café & Pub, or they may wish to visit the UC Davis Bookstore.

City Profile Davis, CA
Davis, in the north of California, is a town with approximately 64,000 inhabitants and lies only 120 kilometers away from San Francisco, and 211 kilometers from Lake Tahoe. There are great opportunities for ski driving and snowboarding. The symbol of the city is a wheel, because Davis is considered a bicycle city. Climatically, one can call the city Mediterranean, because the summers are hot and dry; the winters are relatively mild, and temperatures fall only on few days under the freezing point. Davis is strongly ecologically oriented; there is a bio market: Farmers Market, an ecological supermarket: Food Coop and one of the oldest ecological festivals of California: Whole Earth Day. Valuable attractions are for example the Wetlands, with their one-of-a-kind damp, or the Design museum.

Placement fees:
US$ 200 for more than four weeks
US$ 100 for two to four weeks

approximately US$ 50 per night for a shared room and meal plan.

ISP Shared Housing Program

The ISP Shared Housing Program provides a less expensive alternative by offering students the opportunity to live in local homes that have been converted to student housing. Lease terms are for a minimum of six months. All students will share a community bathroom, kitchen and study area. In some cases, landlords do live in the units.

US$ 300 placement fee
US$ 200 refundable security deposit
US$ 670 monthly rent

Private Accomodation

Who would rather choose to live off-campus, can look for private offers.

This kind of accommodation is a good opportunity to socialize with American students or families beyond the exchange program. This is offered by many families or even student flat shares.

This kind of accommodation may be a bit more expensive than residential accommodation or a host family. You should also be aware of hidden costs, for example for deposits, electricity or the like and carefully read the agreement.

You should also think of the time it takes to look for an accommodation. This should be considered beforehand, and perhaps it is a good solution to travel to America a bit earlier.

Fees:
About US$ 350 to US$ 400 for one room per month

The fees for apartments or small flats are higher and you can find out about them in current advertisements.

Apartment Information

Homestay

Anyone who wants to live in a family environment should take advantage of this offer. You get the opportunity to experience American family life and traditions at first hand. Students get their own room with a bed, a dresser, a desk and two or three meals a day, depending on what they want.

Who takes a homestay with an American family into consideration should be aware of certain rules and regulations of living together.

Two different providers are offering Homestay Programs, WISE Homestay and ISP Homestay.

- WISE Homestay -
Placement Fee:
US$295 for five to 10 weeks
US$75 continuation fee for additional term in same home
