City Profile Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz, in the US Federal State of California, is with approximately 55,000 inhabitants a relative contemplative city. It lies in the Sierra Nevada and is only approx. 100 kilometers south of San Francisco because of the northern edge of the Monterey Bay. The Santa Cruz Beach board-mill, California's oldest entertainment park, along with the Giant Dipper, from 1924, ensures that tourism, apart from agriculture and high technology, is the most important economic source of the city. The climate is mild; the highest average temperature is about 21 °C, and the lowest weather around: 7 °C - thus being optimal for all kinds of water sport: The city is the birth place of surfing, because in 1885, the sport was tried out for the first time in California. Therefore, Santa Cruz is also called "Surf town, USA." International Surfing competitions regularly take place. The city center is the heart of Santa Cruz. It offers a large range of fashion shops, street cafés, restaurants, and an exciting night life with music events, cinemas, night clubs, and much more. One can also do something cultural and visit galleries or museums.
